A fair question! Actually, I have to say no, not directly. I was never more than vaguely aware of Modesty Blaise as a young, budding artist. But clearly, the illustrative approach of artists like Alex Raymond, et al have been common inspirations to a lot of us. Coincidentally, I was asked at a conic convention earlier this fall for the first time ever to do a Modesty Blaise commission. It was terrific fun– I felt right at home with the whole style and look. So that stylist similarity that you sense isn’t just in your imagination!
Heh yup. Though she’ll surely need to step out of the comfort zone once more to see after Cactus. I don’t think he’s dead … yet … Still hoping it was only a flesh wound! 😮
(In case you wonder why: He did not die “on-screen”, just fell. The plattering blood could as well hint at a severe surface wound. And his hand doesn’t twitch weirdly in the panel where he falls. Just an instant impression, I did not leaf back and check macabre things in other stories. 🙂 )
Excellent comments. And by the way I think “pushing Mercy out of her comfort zone” would be a fine summary of one of my main goals with this whole story. A few more twists along those lines are still to come.
Is it just me or do you draw inspiration from Modesty Blaise?

Ow … this promises some literal biting the, err, mud, for Rolo.
Great action scene! 🙂
Thanks! Don’t want to tip any spoilers, but the action does seem to be heading towards Mercy’s comfort zone, doesn’t it?
